A portable pa system is a valuable piece of equipment in scenarios where a speaker or an instrument (or instruments) require a boost in volume. These systems are particularly effective when used outdoors, as the ambient sounds can dampen the sound source quite dramatically. Weather can also affect natural sound of a voice or instrument; indeed a harsh wind can mute a public speaker who is only a short distance away. This is why portable PAs are used extensively in sporting arenas for officials to communicate to players or spectators. Of course, a wireless portable PA system can also used by traveling bands and public speakers.

No matter how useful a small portable PA system can be, a poorly engineered system can end up causing more trouble than it is worth. Eardrum piercing feedback and low frequency boom are just a couple of problems that can arise when poor equipment has been selected. How can you make the best of a bad situation? You will be glad to know that there are several outboard units that can enhance a portable PA and eliminate problems. Equalizers, compressors, limiters and various effects can turn a very amateur sounding system into a very impressive one.

The graphic equalizer is almost always teamed up with a PA system—portable or installed. This sound equalizing unit gives the operator the ability to cut or boost certain frequencies. If you are having problems with low frequency boom, you can cut all of the low frequencies to eliminate the problem. The human voice operates in the higher frequencies, so you will not be altering the amplified voice, you will only eliminate the audible boom. If your microphone is lacking in fidelity or your speaker has a muddy sounding voice, you can help make him or her sound clearer by boosting the higher frequencies and increasing sibilance.

If hissing or strange noise pickup is a problem, a compressor, limiter or gate can be used to automatically shut off the sound when no one is speaking into the microphone. As soon as the speaker starts speaking, the sound will be allowed through. There are several other ways of enhancing the sound of your best portable PA system, do not suffer poor sound quality — correct it.
