There are plenty of sports that require the use of a mouth guard. Without fail, all of them are high impact or have the potential for high impact to the head or facial area. Sports like football or boxing need the participants to make sure that they have a sports mouth guard.
By having a mouth guard, injuries can be at least lessened. A little known fact about being knocked out from a blow to the head is that if the persons who were knocked out were clenching their jaws at the time, the energy transmitted from one side of their face to the other would go straight through the jaws and therefore be lessened. When the mouth is open (which without a mouth guard is almost all of the time), if a blow to the face is incurred, the energy cannot dissipate from the affected area because it cannot transfer through the bone and the teeth. Using a mouth guard for sports means that the jaws stay shut and the teeth are protected.

Another benefit of using a mouth guard is to make sure that the teeth cannot cut the tongue. As many people know, having the teeth biting into the tongue is a very painful experience and can certainly detract from being able to concentrate on the game at hand.
Most new mouth guards are of the “boil and fit” variety. This means that once you get your new mouth guard out of the packaging from shop, you will place a mouth guard into a pan of just boiled water for between 10 and 30 seconds. This process serves to soften the material of the mouth guard.
Once the required time has elapsed, the mouth guard is fished back out of the water (be careful not to burn your hands) and then placed straight in the mouth. Once in your mouth, bite down on the mouth guard with medium pressure and hold it there for around about 30 seconds. Be very careful not to bite down with all your strength otherwise your teeth will go through the material. By doing this properly you will basically create a custom mouth guard that fits your mouth perfectly.
Leave a mouth guard to rest for a couple of minutes and then come back when it is very cold and set. Place it back in your mouth and see what the fit is like. It should fit snugly in the desired area. If it does not then many mouth guards give you another go at heating them up in hot water and making another mold.
The most important thing to do when trying to get the best out of your new mouth guard is to take your time and read the instructions very so that you understand the process that is involved in getting a correct fit. If you can get this right, you will well on your way to getting maximum enjoyment out of having to wear a mouth guard!
