LEDs have been used in electronics for many years. They have been used extensively in home electronic appliances as a method of denoting the status of a particular device. Although the LED has been used in consumer products so extensively, it is only recently that they have been employed in lighting applications. This is because LED technology has advanced and now “super bright” LEDs are more reliable and less likely to burn out. In fact, the LED light source is far more energy efficient than the common lamp due to the electric energy source being converted mostly to light instead of heat. If you were to measure the heat being output from the best LED torch against a comparable electric lamp you will be quite surprised at how cool the LED light is in comparison to the bulb.
LED lighting also tends to be very compact in comparison to a normal lamp. This has lead to the release of a huge range of lighting equipment. There are lights which can sit comfortably around the wearer’s forehead lighting the way ahead, and bicyclists now have a huge range of reliable lights to choose from which are not intrusive and easily mounted.
